Chasing Light: A Day With My Camera

From blue hour to golden hour: how the light shapes my day when I'm filming on the road.

On filming days, my schedule isn’t set by the clock — it’s set by the light. Here’s what a typical day looks like, and why I plan it this way.

  • Before sunrise: blue hour for calm, moody landscapes and town scenes with lights still on.
  • Sunrise to mid-morning: warm, low light — the best time for people, markets and mountains.
  • Midday: harsh light, so I film interiors, forests, shade and interviews.
  • Late afternoon: golden hour again, long shadows, beautiful skin tones.
  • After sunset: blue hour, city lights and, on clear nights, the stars.
The first hour of light is worth the early alarm.

Learning to read light changed my films more than any new camera ever did.
