The regions I film most — what makes each one special, when to go and the stories to start with.
Nepal packs a whole continent’s worth of landscapes into one small country: tropical lowland forests, green hill farms, ancient cities and the highest mountains on Earth. These are the regions I return to again and again, with the stories and films from each one.
Kathmandu Valley
Three royal cities, two great stupas and festivals almost every week. The valley is where Nepal’s history is still lived, not just visited.
- Boudhanath and Swayambhunath at sunrise
- Newar courtyards, craft workshops and street food
- Best time: all year — autumn is clearest
Pokhara & Annapurna
Lakeside mornings, paragliders over the valley and the gateway to some of the world’s best-loved treks.
- Phewa Lake by rowing boat at dawn
- Sunrise viewpoints and hillside villages
- Best time: October–November, March–April
Ganesh Himal & Rubi Valley
Tamang villages, homestays and high passes far from the busy routes — the setting for my Rubi Valley documentary.
- Village homestays and local festivals
- Big views of the Ganesh Himal range
- Best time: spring and autumn
Manaslu Region
A restricted-area trek around the world’s eighth-highest mountain, rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture.
- Stone villages of the Nubri valley
- The Larkya La pass, above 5,100 m
- Needs a special permit and licensed guide
The Terai
Flat, green and full of life. National parks with rhinos, deer and birds, and Tharu villages with their own culture.
- Guided jungle walks at dawn
- River safaris and village visits
- Best time: October–March
Further Afield
Desert roads, mountain villages abroad and old trade routes — the journeys that take the channel beyond the Himalaya.
- Silk Road landscapes
- Mountain Portugal
- More destinations coming soon
