My Gear
The cameras, audio, bags and small things I trust on long trips — and why each one earned its place.
I’m asked about gear more than anything else. The truth is that the camera matters less than you think: light, sound, patience and story matter more. But a well-chosen kit makes long days easier, so here’s what I carry and what I’d recommend to someone starting out.
Camera & lenses
- Mirrorless body
- Small, quiet and good in low light — important for temples, kitchens and night scenes.
- Wide-to-standard zoom
- Covers most travel scenes without changing lenses on a dusty trail.
- Fast prime
- For interviews, portraits and evenings by the fire.
Audio
- On-camera shotgun mic
- Clean natural sound everywhere I go.
- Wireless lavalier
- For interviews in noisy streets and windy passes.
- Foam & fur windshields
- Small, light and they save many takes in the mountains.
Support
- Travel tripod
- For timelapses, interviews and night skies.
- Compact gimbal
- Walking shots and smooth reveals — packed away most of the day.
Power & storage
- Spare batteries
- At least three, kept warm inside my jacket at altitude.
- Power bank
- Charges camera batteries via USB when there’s no electricity.
- Two backup drives
- Every card copied twice, every night.
Bags & protection
- Camera backpack with side access
- Quick to reach the camera without taking the bag off.
- Rain cover and dry bags
- Monsoon and river crossings are real.
Editing
- Laptop with a fast SSD
- Rough cuts on the road, final edits at home.
- Colour-accurate monitor
- So the grade looks right on every screen.
- Good headphones
- Half of a film is sound.
Just starting out?Use the phone or camera you already have and buy a microphone first. Viewers forgive soft footage, but they rarely stay through bad sound.
