Homestay Life in the Himalayan Hills

Sleeping under a family's roof, eating what they eat and waking up to their routine — the most honest way to know a place.

Hotels show you a place. Homestays let you live in it for a few days. In the hill villages of Nepal, a homestay usually means a spare room in a family house, dal bhat at the kitchen fire and a front-row seat to everyday life: milking, school runs, fieldwork and long evening conversations.

What to expect

  • Simple rooms, shared bathrooms and early nights
  • Home-cooked meals — usually the best food of the trip
  • Hosts who are happy to share their culture if you show real interest

Being a good guest

Learn a few words of greeting, eat what you’re served, ask before taking photos and offer to help. The small effort goes a long way, and it’s often how the best stories begin.
