The Joy of Getting Lost

Some of my best days on the road started with a wrong turn. In praise of putting the map away — safely.

I’m not talking about being lost on a glacier — that’s dangerous and never fun. I mean the small, safe kind of lost: taking the other lane, getting off the bus one stop early, following a path because the light looked nice.

One wrong turn in the hills led me to a family drying corn on their roof, who invited me in for tea. That afternoon became one of my favourite scenes I’ve ever filmed — and it was never on any plan.

Get lost safelySave offline maps, tell someone your plans, carry water and a charged phone, and never wander off-trail in the high mountains. In towns and villages, though — go ahead and take the other lane.
