Walking With Local Guides

A good guide doesn't just show you the trail. They open doors, translate jokes and turn a walk into a story.

Some of my favourite people on the road have been guides. They know which family will welcome you for tea, which elder remembers the old songs and which shortcut is worth the mud. Many of the scenes in my films only happened because a guide made the introduction.

The trail is better with someone who knows its stories.

Finding a good guide

  • Choose licensed guides, ideally from the region you’re visiting.
  • Ask other travellers and your guesthouse for recommendations.
  • Agree on the route, daily pay and what’s included before you start.
  • Tip fairly and treat them as a travel partner, not a service.
