Pokhara Beyond the Lakeside

Most visitors never leave the lakeside strip. Here's what you find when you walk a little further.

Pokhara’s lakeside is easy to love: cafés, boats, mountain views over breakfast. But stay a few extra days and walk out of town, and a quieter Pokhara appears — hillside villages, forest trails and viewpoints where the only other people are farmers on their way to the fields.

Three easy escapes

  1. A sunrise viewpoint above the city. Go early, take a jacket and wait for the peaks to turn pink.
  2. A walk across the lake to the forested hills. Take a boat across and follow the trail up through the trees.
  3. A day in a nearby village. Ask your guesthouse about homestays just outside town — one night is enough to feel the difference.

Pokhara is the starting point for many treks, but it’s worth a few slow days on its own. Don’t just pass through.
