Much of Nepal’s hill country is shaped by hand. Terraces climb the slopes like steps, and each one has been built, repaired and planted by families for generations. This documentary follows the rhythm of that work across the seasons — planting, weeding, harvest and the festivals that mark each stage.

Work that brings people together

In many villages, planting day is a shared event. Neighbours help each other in turn, songs are sung in the fields, and the day ends with food for everyone who came. It’s hard work, but it’s also one of the most joyful things I have filmed.

A changing landscape

Many young people now leave the villages for the cities or for work abroad. The film listens to the farmers who stayed, the ones who returned, and their thoughts on what the hills will look like for the next generation.
