Choosing Your First Trek: Easy, Moderate or Hard?

Not every trek is Everest Base Camp. How to pick a route that matches your time, fitness and travel style.

“Which trek should I do?” is the question I’m asked most. The honest answer: it depends on your time, fitness and what you want to see. Here’s a simple way to think about it.

LevelLengthGood for
Easy2–5 daysFirst-timers and families. Lower hills, villages and big mountain views without high altitude.
Moderate6–12 daysReasonably fit walkers. Longer days, some altitude, and a real sense of journey.
Hard12+ daysExperienced trekkers. High passes, remote areas, restricted-area permits and serious acclimatisation.

Questions to ask yourself

  • How many days do I really have, including buffer days for weather?
  • Do I want mountains, culture, or both?
  • Am I comfortable with basic teahouses and cold nights?
  • Do I prefer busy trails with services, or quiet trails with fewer comforts?

Whatever you choose, go with a local guide, start slower than you think you need to, and remember the trek you finish happily is better than the famous one you rush.
