First Time in Nepal: 12 Things I Wish Every Visitor Knew

From greetings to dal bhat refills, the small things that make a first trip to Nepal easier and more respectful.

I meet a lot of first-time visitors on the trail and in the city. Most of them have the same questions, so here is the list I’d give a friend before their first trip.

  1. Learn “Namaste”. Palms together, a small nod. It works everywhere.
  2. Use your right hand to give and receive money, food and gifts.
  3. Walk clockwise around stupas and temples.
  4. Ask before photographing people, especially at religious sites.
  5. Dal bhat comes with refills. Say “pugyo” when you’ve had enough.
  6. Carry small notes. Change is often hard to find outside the cities.
  7. Plan for slow roads. Distances on the map take longer than you think.
  8. Drink treated water and avoid plastic where you can.
  9. Take shoes off when entering homes and some temples.
  10. Dress modestly, especially in villages and sacred places.
  11. Expect power cuts in remote areas — carry a power bank.
  12. Say yes to tea. It’s how most good conversations begin.
Around stupas, always walk clockwise.
