Budget Travel in Nepal: Making Your Money Go Further

Nepal can be wonderfully affordable — if you travel like a local. Simple ways to spend less and experience more.

You don’t need a big budget to have a great trip in Nepal. Some of my favourite experiences have cost almost nothing. These are the habits that help stretch your money without missing out.

  • Eat dal bhat. It’s filling, healthy and usually comes with free refills.
  • Use local buses for short trips — slower, but much cheaper and more memorable.
  • Stay in homestays and family guesthouses instead of big hotels.
  • Travel in shoulder seasons for better prices and quieter trails.
  • Refill water with a filter instead of buying bottles.
  • Bargain politely in markets, but not for food or small services.
Local food is the best value — and the tastiest.

Where not to saveTravel insurance, a good guide in the mountains, and fair tips for porters and guides. These matter for your safety and for the people who make your trip possible.
