Responsible Trekking: Leave the Himalaya Better

Small choices on the trail add up. How to trek in a way that respects the mountains and the people who live there.

Every year, more people walk Nepal’s trails. That brings jobs and opportunity, but also rubbish, pressure on firewood and changing village life. The good news is that a few simple choices make a real difference.

  • Carry out what you carry in. Take batteries and plastic back to the city.
  • Refill, don’t buy. Use a filter bottle or purification tablets.
  • Hire local guides and porters, pay fairly and make sure porters have proper gear.
  • Eat local food that doesn’t need to be carried up from the city.
  • Respect sacred sites — walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls.
  • Ask before photographing people and homes.
Leave the trail better than you found it.
