Filming Travel Videos With a Small Kit

You don't need a film crew to make a travel film. How I shoot, record sound and stay ready with gear that fits in one bag.

When you’re walking six hours a day, a small kit isn’t a compromise — it’s the only way you’ll actually film. Lighter gear also means people relax around you, which matters more than any lens.

My basic setup

  • One mirrorless camera body with a versatile zoom
  • A small gimbal for walking shots, packed away most of the day
  • A compact on-camera mic plus a wireless lav for interviews
  • A light travel tripod for timelapses and interviews
  • Plenty of batteries and memory cards, and two backup drives

Habits that matter more than gear

  • Record clean natural sound at every location — it saves the edit.
  • Film wide, medium and close for every scene.
  • Back up every night, even when you’re exhausted.
  • Ask before you film people, and show them the shot if they’re curious.
