The Best Phone Settings for Travel Video

You can make a great travel film on your phone. These settings and habits make the biggest difference.

Many people who message me are starting with just a phone — and that’s perfect. Modern phones are capable cameras. These settings will make your footage look far more professional.

  • Lock exposure and focus (tap and hold) so brightness doesn’t jump around.
  • Pick one frame rate for the whole trip — 25 or 30 fps for normal footage, higher only for slow motion.
  • Shoot in 4K if storage allows; it gives you room to crop.
  • Turn off beauty filters and heavy auto-enhancements.
  • Clean the lens before every shot — it sounds obvious, but it’s the most common problem.
  • Use an external mic for talking to camera or interviews.
Steady shotsHold the phone with both hands, keep elbows tucked in and walk slowly with bent knees. Or rest it against a wall or railing. Smooth footage instantly looks better.
