Packing for a Himalayan Trek: What Actually Earned Its Place

After several treks with a camera bag on my back, this is the short list of things I'd never leave behind — and what stays home.

Every kilo you carry up a mountain is a kilo you feel on day five. I’ve overpacked enough times to know what really matters. This is my list for teahouse treks in Nepal, with camera gear covered separately in my filming kit post.

Never leave without

  • A warm sleeping bag — teahouse blankets aren’t enough higher up
  • Down jacket, a fleece and a proper rain shell
  • Broken-in boots and good socks
  • Water purification tablets or a filter bottle
  • Headtorch, power bank and a small first-aid kit
  • Cash in small notes — ATMs disappear fast
Lay it all out, then take a third of it away.

What I stopped bringing

Extra outfits, heavy books, a second pair of shoes “just in case.” You will wear the same clothes for days, and nobody on the trail will mind.
